FreedomPop Lets Users Bring Their Own Phones To Free Calling Service

In a move to sign up more consumers for the company's free mobile phone service, Los Angeles-based FreedomPop said yesterday that it will start letting users bring their old Sprint phones to its service. The company--which is offering up both free broadband and free mobile phone service--said users with old Sprint phones can add a line using the service for free, by simply activating those old phones on its network. The announcement came as FreedomPOp also launched a new, low cost Android smartphone, the HTC Evo 4G, which it is offering up for $99. FreedomPop is led by Stephen Stokols, and has been looking to take advantage of low marketing and acquisition costs, plus premium plans to support its free broadband and mobile phone service. The company is backed by venture capital investors DCM, Atomico, and Mangrove Partners.
