OUYA Gets $15M For Open Video Game Console
Santa Monica-based OUYA--which is developing a low cost, video game console--said today that it has raised $15M in a funding round, led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and including Mayfield Fund, NVIDIA, Shasta Ventures, and Occam Partners. OUYA said it is creating a "new kind of game console" which is open to all videogame developers, and where any developer can publish a game. OUYA said that every game developed for its console will be free to try, and that it already has more than 12,000 game creators registered to develop games on its platform.
The new funding for OUYA comes after a hugely successful crowdfunding effort for the company, which raised $8.6M on Kickstarter, with over 63,400 people contributing to fundraise for the effort. OUYA was created by Julie Uhrman (Vivendi Universal, IGN, GameFly), Yves Behar (Jambox, One Laptop per Child) and others.
OUYA's open video game console is based on Android, and includes an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage; OUYA said it will make the console available on June 25th through such retailers as Amazon, Best Buy, GAME, GameStop, and Target, for $99.99.
