UCSD Plans Battery Energy Storage System

The University of California, San Diego is planning to install a big, battery-based energy storage system on campus, to capture wind and solar power to use on the campus, the school said this morning. According to UCSD, it will install a 2.5 megawatt, 5 megawatt/hour system as part of its own microgrid, tapping rechargeable batteries from BYD. The schol said the new battery can store enough power to power 2,500 homes. The new battery storage system is part of UCSD's sustainability efforts. Battery-based, energy storage systems are used to capture wind and solar energy when they are produced, and to meter out that energy when required, rather than potentially losing that renewable energy due to lack of demand at a particular moment.
