Verve Powers AP's iPad Efforts

San Diego-based Verve Wireless, the developer of the Associate Press's mobile phone applications, may benefit from the AP's announcement last week of a new business unit specifically targeted at taking advantage of the Apple iPad. Verve confirmed that it is powering the back end of the news organizations's new iPad effort, as it currently does all of the AP's other mobile products. Verve would not comment on the business deal behind the effort, but did say it had several engineers working full time on the project. The AP said Friday that it would create a new unit, called the AP Gateway, which will look to expand its existing AP Mobile news service for smart phones to new platforms like the Apple iPad.
