Broadcom Backs Science Fair Effort

Irvine-based Broadcom is backing a nationwide science fair competition, with a six year, $6M investment, the firm said this week. According to the Broadcom Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Broadcom which supports science, technology, engineering, and mathematics efforts, it is working with the Society for Science & the Public (SSP) on a new, national middle school foundation focused on science, technology, engineering and math.

The two said that the Broadcom MASTERS hopes to "inspire and reward" interest in science, technology, engineering and math among students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Students involved in the effort will participate in over 350 science fairs and programs, with a final project judging in the fall of 2011 in Washington, D.C. The winner of that will receive $25,000 in an education grand prize from the Samueli Foundation, the charitable foundation of Susan and Henry Samueli. Samueli is one of the co-founders of Broadcom.
