Broadcom Launches 5G Wi-Fi Chips

Irvine-based semiconductor maker Broadcom announced a new set of Wi-Fi chips today, supporting the new 802.11ac standard. The firm said its 5G Wi-Fi system-on-a-chip (SoC) is based on the new 802.11ac standard, and provides three times faster wireless access and better power efficiency that prior wireless standards. Broadcom said it is aiming at enterprise and carrier class access points, branch office routers, and business-class, integrated services routers with the new chip. The firm said it is sampling chips now, and will start production volumes in the second half of 2012.
