TuSimple Aims At Self Driving Vehicle Market

San Diego- and Beijing-based TuSimple, a startup developing autonomous driving technology, says it has received a permit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to test autonomous driving vehicles on the road. The startup says it hopes to run a test this month taking an autonomous vehicle 420 miles from San Diego to Tucson. The company--which says its engineering and business teams are based in Beijing, China and its lab team is based in San Diego--has roughly 15 different engineering positions listed for its San Diego location, ranging from Autonomous Driving Software Engineer to Senior Machine Learning Scientist, and around 49 employees listed on LinkedIn split between Beijing and San Diego. The company says it has been developing its systems since 2015. The company's co-founder is Xiaodi Hou. TuSimple says it is the only San Diego company to have a permit for testing autonomous vehicles in California.
