GoMeta Gets $2M For Augmented Reality Universe Tools

San Diego-based GoMeta, a new, augmented reality startup being led by serial entrepreneur Dmitry Shapiro, has raised $2M in a seed funding round, and launched its app out of beta. The funding came from Mike Jones (Science Inc., MySpace) as well as Michael Eisner (former CEO of Disney), plus Moonshots Capital (the venture firm led by startup veteran Kelly Perdew). GoMeta develops a mobile platform--currently running on iOS--that allows developers create their own augmented reality apps and worlds. Those worlds--think "Pokemon Go"--revolve around interaction with the real world and maps. The company showcases three apps created with its platform on its website--an "AR scavenger hunt" inn San Diego run on October 1st, an "Augmented Halloween" quest which awarded real cash prizes last night; and an "alien crash" scavenger hunt in Santa Monica which awarded $1000 to the winner. Shapiro was most recently at Google, but also had served at Anybeat, MySpace Music, and founded video site Veoh. More information »
