Universal Electronics Buys Zilog Assets

Cypress-based Universal Electronics, a manufacturer of wireless remote control technology for home entertainment, digital media, and other devices, said this morning that it has purchased the universal remote control software, intellectual property, and related assets and personnel from Zilog, Inc. San Jose-based Zilog is a developer of embedded systems-on-a-chips. The acquisition was part of a bigger divestiture of Zilog's wireless control business. Zilog also sold two of its product lines to Maxim Integrated Products. Specific terms of the Univeral Electronics sale were not disclosed, however, Zilog said its total sale of its wireless business to both Maxim and Universal Electronics was worth $31M. Zilog also said that approximately 128 of its employees will join either Maxim or Universal Electronics as part of the deal.
