VIZIO Goes 3D, Uses RealD

Irvine-based HDTV maker VIZIO announced this morning that it has launched a new, 3D television line, in addition to 3D glasses, 3D Blu-ray players, and other accessories. VIZIO said it is launching three new, full HD 3d televisions in 42", 47", and 55" screen sizes, initially online and later this month at retailers. VIZIO is tapping Beverly Hills-based RealD for its 3D technology.

VIZIO said that the new units are available at Amazon.com, SamsClub.com, Target.com, and its own web site, with retail availability expected later this month and wider availability in December. The new 3D television also support connected TV and running web based apps, built in 802.11n wireless connections, and Bluetooth support. As part of the launch of its 3D line, the firm also said it is debuting a new TV spot featuring Beyonce promoting its television line.

Separately, RealD detailed further information on the licensing, saying that VIZIO has licensed both its stereoscopic RealD format and RealD 3D lens and synchronization protocols in VIZIO's 3D eyewear. No financial details of the licensing deal were disclosed by either firm. In addition to RealD's own equipment deployment in theaters, RealD has also been licensing its 3D protocol and technology to consumer electronics makers.
