WD Announces 10,000 RPM Drive For Enterprise Market

Lake Forest-based WD, a manufacturer of hard disk drives, announced a new, 10,000 RPM, 2.5-inch SATA drive targeted at the enterprise market. WD said its new WD VelociRaptor drives are focused on blade servers and 1U and 2U rack servers, and will provide up to 300GB of capacity. The new drives use the smaller, 2.5-inch form factor to reduce energy use and consume a smaller amount of physical space. WD also said that the reliability of the drive is aimed at business-critical, enterprise applications, providing 1.4 million hours MTBF -- a much higher reliability rating that most SATA hard drives. WD said the drives are in evaluation with OEM customers, and will be available through distributors by the end of the month.
