Amazon Starts Robot Deliveries In Irvine

For some residents of Irvine, the future is now here--in the form of autonomous, robotic delivery of packages from Amazon. Amazon announced on Tuesday morning that it will begin delivering some packages in Irvine with a "small number" of its robotic, Amazon Scout devices, as it expands testing of its automated robot delivery service for Prime members. According to Amazon, those deliveries will occur Monday through Friday, during daylight hours, and will initially include an "Amazon Scout Ambassador" to make sure that deliveries go okay. The tests are the first expansion of the Amazon Scout delivery service beyond the company's headquarters in Seattle. Amazon said it will offer up same day delivery options via scout, including fast, FREE Same-Day, One-Day and Two-Day shipping for Prime members. Amazon's Scout service uses rolling robotic vehicles for delivery, although Amazon one day hopes to use drones to make those deliveries to its customers.
