Arensis Deploys Off-Grid Power To Puerto Rico

Los Angeles-based Arensis, a startup developing off-grid power systems that use biomass for generating power, said it is deploying its systems to Puerto Rico, in the wake of Hurricane Maria. The company--which is based in the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI)--said it is initially deploying its system at the City of Fajardo, Puerto Rico. The company says its initial unit will power Farjado's Sports Complex, which is being used as a refugee shelter and distribution center. Arensis says its system will deliver 50kW of energy to the complex. As part of the effort, Arensis said it will relocate staff to run the system, with the intent to produce fuel on site using debris and woody biomass from the hurricane's destruction. The City of Farjardo is still completely without power a month after Hurricane Maria hit. Arensis has an inside link to Puerto Rico: the company said that its Chief Legal and Business Development Officer is a native-born Puerto Rican.
