Freeform Tackles Automated, 3D Printing Factories

Hawthorne-based Freeform, a venture-backed startup founded by former engineers and others from SpaceX, said on Wednesday that it has launched a new business which aims to provide autonomous, 3D metal printing to manufacturers. The company--which says it is backed by Two Sigma Ventures, Founders Fund and Threshold Ventures--says it is looking to bring "on-demand" production to mainstream industries, via "autonomous printing factories" which provie manufacturing-as-service. The new startup is headed by Erik Palitsch, Co-Founder and CEO. The company said that "a heavy reliance on human labor have fundamentally limited the pace of innovation and resulted in long and costly efforts to scale production." The company did not say how much it raised in its recent funding round.
