Ice Energy Offers OC Companies Free HVAC Replacements, As Part Of SCE Program

Santa Barbara-based energy storage startup Ice Energy has an almost-too-good-to-pass-up offer for businesses in Orange County, as part of a recent energy storage contract the company won with Southern California Edison (SCE): a free, HVAC replacement and energy storage system. According to Ice Energy--whose backers include SAIL Venture Partners and others--it is looking to deliver up to 1,800 of its "Ice Bear" systems to commercial and industrial companies in Orange County, as part of a grid offload project it scored with SCE. Ice Energy's systems--which costs $100,000 or more--freeze water into ice during "off-peak" energy times, and use that stored ice during hot weather to cool a building. The company recently won a 25.6 megawatt (MW) procurement deal with SCE, which is driving the free offer. Ice Energy--led by Mike Hopkins--says its systems lower air conditioning bills by up to 40 percent, shave the "peak demand" caused by air conditioning, and are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 200,000 tons over the life of the SCE project. Orange County users can get more information from Ice Energy.
