Microsemi Gets Space Components Certification

Aliso Viejo-based Microsemi Corporation, which develops a range of electronics components, said this morning that one of its products--its RTG4 high speed signal processing, radiation-tolerant field programmable gate array (FPGA), has received a qualification from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). According to the company, it has achieved Qualified Manufacturers List (QML) Class V qualification, which it says will open up the door for the use of its FPGA components in the "most critical space missions". The component can now be used in "Class 1" flight systems. Microsemi said it is the only FPGA to meet the requirements for those missions, opening up the use of FPGAs for those space missions. FPGAs have not been widely used in space, because radiation can completely reset those field programmable arrays, rendering the hardware using those components useless.
