Novatel Points To Patents
San Diego-based Novatel Wireless is calling attention to its patent portfolio this morning, on the heels of the firm's continued launch of its personal Wi-Fi hotspot products, saying it now has five key patents covering the technology behind those products. The firm said the five patents include one which is scheduled to be issued on August 11th, and that it has an additional 14 patents related to the technology. Novatel has recently launched a line of products, its MiFi Mobile Intelligent Hotspot products, which turns a cell phone connection into a personal Wi-Fi hotspot. The firm's products are being sold by Sprint, Verizon, and others. Novatel did not say why it was calling attention to its patents, but the firm is undoubtedly looking to discourage imitators hoping to also cash in on the segment.
