Qualcomm Targets MEMS
San Diego-based Qualcomm said this morning that it is forming a new business focuses on applyings MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) to the mobile phone business. The new QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies business is a wholly owned subsidiary of the CDMA technology leader, and will focus on increasing the capability of consumer-targeted mobile products using MEMS technology, specifically in the area of liquid-crystal displays. The new company leverages Qualcomm's acquisition of Iridigm, and will be headed by Greg Heinzinger. Qualcomm also said that it has signed an agreement with Prime View International, a manufacturer of small- and medium-format thin film transistor liquid-crystal displays as part of the new business.
