San Diego International Airport To Install Battery Storage System
The San Diego International Airport (SAN), has installed a high tech, energy storage system from Engie Storage, a developer of battery-based energy storage systems, to help it reduce its energy charges and power bill. According to Engie, San Diego International Airport has installed a 2 MW/4 MWh energy storage system, which is tied to the airport's existing photovoltaic solar system. According to the two, the new energy storage system will reduce energy charges during peak demand which equate to approximately 40 percent of the airport's monthly electricity costs. Cost of the new system was not announced. According to Engie, it expects the system to begin operation in early 2020. Engie's battery storage systems are based on Lithium-ion batteries. The new battery energy storage system will absorb energy from the airport's photovoltaic solar power system, and discharge those batteries during peak energy times--helping the airport avoid peak power usage charges. The two said that the storage system is just one of the parts of a strategic energy plan for the airport, which will also include LED lighting retrofits, HVAC efficiency improvements, additional solar and battery storage, and more.
