Smith Micro Gains Patent

Aliso Viejo-based Smith Micro Software, reported Thursday that the firm has gained a new patent covering its compression technology. According to Smith Micro, it received U.S. Patent No. 7,502,514, "System and Method for Lossless Compression of Already Compressed Files" for technology used to compression JPEG files. The technology is used as part of the firm's StuffIt compression utility line. According to the filing, the inventors on the patent were Yaakov Gringeler and Darryl Lovato. Lovato is the firm's Vice President of Advanced Technology. The patent was granted on March 10th, and was originally filed by the firm in January of 2005. Smith Micro said the technology covered by the patent allows its StuffIt software to reduce the size of difficult-to-compress JPEG files by up to 30 percent.
