Los Angeles-based solar thermal power developer SolarReserve has signed a deal to build a 100 megawatt, solar thermal project in South Africa, to help deliver power to South Africa's electricity grid. According to SolarReserve, it has signed a signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom, South Africa’s public electric utility company, for the Redstone Solar Thermal Power Project, a solar thermal power project with 100 megawatts of power capability and 1,200 megawatt hours of energy storage. The win is part of the South African Department of Energy's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), a consortium led by SolarReserve and International Company for Power and Water (ACWA Power). Financial details of the power production deal were not announced. SolarReserve said it expects the construction of the project to create over 4,000 jobs. The new, solar thermal plant will be located near Postmasburg in the Northern Cape Province, next to two, existing photovoltaic solar power projects already implemented by SolarReserve, the 75 MW Lesedi and 96 MW Jasper photovoltaic solar power projects.
