Qualcomm, Sun Port Java To Snapdragon
San Diego-based Qualcomm and Sun Microsystems announced today that the two are in an effort to port the popular Java programming language to Qualcomm's Snapdragon ARM processor. According to the two firms, Sun has ported its Java Platform Standard Edition 6( Java SE 6) to machines running on Qualcomm's processor. Qualcomm is developing its ARM chipset for netbooks and smart phones; the firm has yet to ship devices using the new processor, but has been demonstrating design wins with OEMs, including a recent demonstration with Google Android OS. Qualcomm said the chip is targeted at what it calls "smartbooks," positioned between smart phones and laptops.
