Report: Ring Now Working With Over 200 Law Enforcement Agencies
Santa Monica-based Ring--the doorbell and security camera maker which is now owned by Amazon--has now partnered up with at least 200 law enforcement agencies, giving those departments the ability to see where Ring cameras are installed in a neighborhood, and allowing the police to directly contact camera owners for requests for footage, according to a report. The report, from Motherboard, says the information was obtained through a public record request, and came via a note taken by a police officer during an April Ring webinar. The close connection with law enforcement means police can request footage without the need for a warrant, although owners do need to consent to share that with law enforcement. The strong ties to law enforcement are not unsurprising for Ring, whose founder, Jamie Siminoff, has said in public that the company's goal with its cameras is to fight crime.
