San Diego Zoo Implements On Site Battery Storage
The San Diego Zoo has implemented new, on-site battery energy storage, thanks to a deal with San Diego-based EDF Renewables North America Distributed Solutions. According to EDF Renewables, San Diego Zoo Global has selected the company to provide onsite battery energy storage to help mitigate energy spikes and reduce energy costs at the zoo. Financial details of the deal were not announced. According to EDF Renewable Energy, the San Diego Zoo is installing a 1 megawatt (MW)/4-megawatt hour (MWh) battery specifically to be used to mitigate spike in energy usage, while recharging when energy is at its lowest available rates. The battery will be used for what is called "demand response", kicking in when energy costs are the highest to prevent "demand charges", the much higher energy cost times of day. According to the two, the deal comes at no additional cost to the zoo: EDF Renewables is only paid based on the actual utility bill savings realized by the Zoo as a result of installing the on-site battery storage.
