Western Digital's MyCloud Offline Due To Hacking
Storage maker Western Digital--which has major operations in Irvine--has seen a major security incident, which has made it impossible for users of the company's cloud-based "MyCloud" network attached storage (NAS) devices to access their data. According to Western Digital, it has been the subject of a "network security incident", and that it has started "implementing practive measures to secure its business operations" including "taking systems and services offline". The company reported that an "unauthorized party obtained certain data from its systems". The hack has apparently made it impossible for users to access data stored in the WD MyCloud service, which requires users to log in to the cloud service--even if data is stored locally on a hard drive. The hack apparently has affected more than MyCloud--Western Digital's website had many pages offline, and the company had a notice posted saying it was "unable to process orders."
